Platinum, Palladium & Cyanotype: Alternative Processes with Norma C. Smith (TONIGHT!)
Thursday evenings, 7-10 pm
Jan. 18 - Feb. 22
This six-week workshop offers students hands-on experience in print making using both processes. Students will learn how to choose the best negative contrast, and how to coat, expose, and process his or her paper or fabric. This highly experimental workshop will provide participants with a basic understanding of the platinum/palladium and cyanotype mediums and the ability to use each in order to add new spice to their images.

He will also detail his way of systematizing the way to make, edit, caption, copyright register, disseminate, and track images. This is not a discussion on the philosophy of different stock agencies, the forces changing the market, or on styles of stock photography. The lecture begins with discussions on why and how to use a flash as the main source of light (meaning a low light situation requiring use of a flash). Additionally, students will learn how to use a flash as a fill light, which means balancing ambient light with the light of a flash unit. Julia will also explain how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of a flash, ways to diffuse a flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations will also include using a flash in a direct or bounce mode, on or off the camera. Wireless flash technology is also discussed, as well as how to “power down” the flash input for specific effects. Participants with work with either digital cameras or with color slide film (which is provided for you). The class begins with a discussion on topic selection and the importance of writing a project proposal. During the monthly group sessions, student work will be critiqued, giving participants the opportunity to learn and study other photographers’ projects. Next Travel Location: The Imperial Cities of Morocco
Saturday, March 24 —Sunday, April 1, 2007
Immerse yourself in the rich cultural history of the imperial cities of Morocco. This trip begins in cosmopolitan Casablanca and ends in mystical Marrakesh, an ancient city painted in weathered tones of pink. In between, there will be visits to Rabat, Morocco’s present day capital, Menkes, a former capital, and Fez, the oldest of the imperial cities. We’ll stay in 4-5 star hotels and will be transported from place to place by van. We’re working with an experienced travel agency to offer a unique experience. In Fez, we’ll wander down narrow winding streets, visit centuries old mosques ,and shop for traditional wares .In Marrakesh, a city set in a spectacular setting against the High Atlas Mountains, we’ll linger around in the open market full of jugglers, snake charmers, magicians and acrobats. There will be a stop at the ruins of Volubilis, a thriving Roman settlement until the 4th century, and a full-day excursion driving along the snowcapped High Atlas Mountains, the largest mountain chain in Africa.
Another day will include a stop at the seaside town of Essaouira, a former Portuguese settlement. Plus a whole lot more. This will be one special trip. Like many of our travel workshops, we encourage participants to come up with a project that they can focus on throughout the week, whether it is to document the cities’ stunning architecture, to shoot with a pinhole camera, or to do portraits of those met on the street. Our objective is to
come away with photographs that develop a theme rather than merely serve as stand-alone travel pictures.
Each day will be divided between traveling, shooting, critiques, private
consultations, and (optional) lectures on various topics. For those photographers shooting with digital cameras, we’ll edit along the way.For those
shooting film, we will get it processed as we can.
The results of this workshop will be exhibited at the Julia Dean Gallery
