From The Julia Dean Photo Workshops

The Crash Flash Course
with Julia Dean
Sat., Dec. 2nd
9 am - 5 pm

In this one-day class, you will learn how to use a flash unit in various lighting situations. First, you will earn about all the buttons and dials on your flash. The day is then divided between lectures and demonstrations on different ways to use your flash. With each demonstration, shooting time will follow so you can put the information to use. The lecture begins with Julia taking your through why and how to use your flash as the main source of light, which would mean that you are shooting in a low light situation where you can't get by without the use of flash. Additionally, you will learn how to use your flash as a fill light, which means balancing ambient light with the light of a flash unit. You'll learn the difference between using your flash on manual mode and in automatic (TTL) mode, and why you would use one over the other. You'll learn how to determine exposure, how to control the light output of your flash, ways to diffuse your flash, and how and why to include or exclude ambient light. Demonstrations also include using a flash in a direct or bounce mode, on or off the camera. Wireless flash technology is also discussed. Julia will also cover how to "power down" the flash input for specific effects. Participants with work with either digital cameras or with color slide film (which is provided for you). If time permits, there will be a demonstration on using multiple flash with slaves or remotes.
